FIREMEN SAVE FOURTEEN LIVES

1914 September 9

Life nets, for the first time in many years, saved four persons from death by fire yesterday morning when the Rose Hotel, Fourth and Clementina streets, burned.

Ten other persons were saved by firemen who climbed fire escape.

These  two persons were injured;

Mrs. W. Girrard,  proprietor of the hotel, who was cut about the face and hands.

James F. Cotter, a guest, who was overcome with smoke in his room on the fourth floor.

A terrific explosion, supposed to have it originated in a gas meter under the stairway, started the fire.

Five minutes after the explosion the four-story frame building was a mass of flames.

Men and women were clinging to fire escapes and hanging to window ledges when fireman dashed up. The Fire nets were spread. Two men and two women had let go their holds and dropped into the nets. None of them was injured, except Mrs. Girrard.

Seven men and two women were taking off fire escapes, Flora Polk was found unconscious in a room upstairs by fireman and was carried out.

Cotter has been trapped in his room. He broke the window sash the chair and started to climb through, but he was overcome. He fainted. The fireman climbed up with the scaling ladder and carried him to safety.

The loss is estimated at $4000.
