The cable car track reconstruction in North Beach caused extremely long stretches of deep street digging where heavy fire apparatus could not cross the light weight automobile temporary bridges. These manifold wagons provided necessary hose that could cross the under construction streets to provide fire protection to the other side. During the 10 months that these units were in service it was not necessary to use them.
