Firehorse Rescue
November 20, 1867
Box 32 – Drumm and California Streets

FIRE THIS MORNING.

— At half-past one o'clock this morning an alarm was given from Signal Box No. 32, for a fire which had broken out in a barber's shop on the north side of Sacramento street, between Drumm and East; the flames communicated to the building adjoining in the rear, but before much damage was done the engines arrived and soon obtained a victory. While the engines are at work the horses are released from the tongue, so as to be out of the way, and the team of No. 1 was treated as usual, when one of the horses walked off a few steps and fell into a man-trap; the hook-and-ladder appliances were brought into use, and the firemen lilted him out of the hole and placed him on the wharf. The streets in the lower part of the city are in a bad condition for night travel.
