FIREMAN KILLE, 2D HURT IN S.F. BLAZE
FALL FATAL AT CAFÉ ON MARKET ST.
One fireman died and another was injured while fighting a stubborn, two-alarm laze early today in the historic Hoffman Grill at 619 Market street.
Dead is hoseman George Wyatt, 63, of 262 Hermann street, a member of Engine Company No. 12.
Injured is Captain Walter Maguire, 50, of 907 Elizabeth street, head of Engine Company No. 9.
Wyatt, a veteran of 33 years in the department, tripped over a hose line and fell, striking his head. He was dead on arrival at Harbor Emergency Hospital.
Macquire suffered smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene.
The fire broke in the basement of the grill, a famous landmark and a popular rendezvous for San Francisco business men.
The flames were confined to the basement, but thick clouds of smoke swirled through the first floor restaurant. Damage was estimated at $6,000
