FIRE DEATH DRIVER CHARGED
1962 July 13
A hog truck driver whose big rig was in a flaming collusion with the fire truck, killing one fireman and injuring five, was charged with misdemeanor manslaughter yesterday.
Assistant District Attorney Ralph MacIntosh filed the charges yesterday afternoon.
Everett Woods. 55, of Stockton, who was at the wheel of the tractor and double trailer when it smashed broadside side into the ladder truck at Third and Harrison Streets suffered minor head injuries.
TANK EXPLODED
Less lucky was the fire truck crew. Its gas tank exploded, spreading the area with flaming liquid.
Fireman Joseph P. Cuff, 36, 1223 10th Ave., was killed, either burned to death or crushed under the wheels of the second trailer – an autopsy will determine which. He leaves a wife and five sons, aged 6 months to 11 years.
Fred Calonica, 38, 78 Lapin Way, was burned severely and also suffered a crushed chest and leg injury. Severely burned were Lt. James Harrington, 46, 3424 Moraga St.., Raymond McTernan, 43, 869 Head St., Frank Plutt, 42 188 Florentine Street and Theodore Sutter, 34, 277 Douglas St.
Woods, westbound on Harrison Street, said his truck’s rumble and the squeals of the pigs prevented him from hearing the warning sounds.
