CLAY STREET FIRE – CRUSHED LEG

George F. Wells, Hoseman Engine Co. No. 12, injured while in the performance of his duty July 16, 1908, at a fire on Clay Street necessitating the amputation of his leg.

Pensioned under the provisions of Article IX, Chapter 7, Section 4 of the Charter, viz. Pensioned August 12, 1908, effective from July 16, 1908, date of application for pension. Mr. Wells was granted a quarterly pension of $180.

In 1908 the yearly salary of a Hoseman was $1,440.

Note: The July 16, 1908 date of death is the date of the injury, not the actual date of death. Mr. Wells was granted a disability retirement pension and was receiving his pension in 1917. We have been unable to find his actual date of death. At the time it was the Department policy to use the date of the injury as the Line of Duty Death date regardless of when a member passed away.
