DEPLORABLE ACCIDENT

1855 January 28

Yesterday morning, at the fire on First street, Thomas Murray, one of the members of Columbian Engine Co. No. 11, whilst standing near the flour mills, was knocked by the iron smoke stack of the mill falling on his head. At 10 o’clock last evening, he died. Deceased was much respected by his acquaintances as an honest, sober, and industrious man.

FIRE DEPARTMENT NOTICE

---You are requested to assemble at the engine house of Columbian Engine No. 11. At one o’clock on this (Sunday) afternoon, in citizen’s dress, to pay the last tribute of respect to our late brother fireman Thomas Murray, who received injuries that caused his death, while in discharge of his duties as a fireman, at the fire on First street.

FIREMAN'S FUNERAL.

1855 January 29

— The funeral of Thomas Murray, the fireman killed at the fire on First street, took place yesterday afternoon, and was one of the largest ever witnessed in this city. The procession passed by the ruins of the late fire, and at this point the persons attending were counted, and found to be 1062 on foot, and 17 horseback, besides 20 carriages. Murray was an active fireman, and was very much respected. His remains have been deposited in the Yerba Buena Cemetry.
