BERG CANDY COMPANY FACTORY FIRE

The earlier fire in the morning was in the Berg Candy Company factory at 638 Clay Street, above which it is the Justice Hotel; property damage was estimated at $100,000.

Lieutenant James C. Herlihy, Rescue Squad. No. 1 was killed when he went into the basement of the Clay Street structure in search of missing companions.

Six other firemen received minor injuries in this fire. They were F. Phillips, Engine No. 4, 235 Leader street, overcome by smoke; Lieutenant G. S. Peters, Engine No. 12, 2921 Folsom street, overcome by smoke; Frank Schultz, Engine No. 9, Battalion Chief D. J. O’Donnell, 233 Eleventh avenue, eyes burned; M. J. Buckley, Engine No. 4, 1617 Noe street, cut by glass; William Calligan, Engine No. 4, 352 Diamond St., fractured left knee and overcome by smoke.

DEATHS

HERLIHY – in this city, June 15, 1925, Lieutenant James C. Herlihy, devoted husband of Margaret E, Herlihy and beloved son of the late Cornelius and Allen Herlihy, a native of San Francisco. A member of the Veteran Firemen’s Association, Mutual aid Society and Widows and Orphans Association of the S.F.F. D., and Golden Gate Aerie No. 61, F. O. E.

Friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend the funeral tomorrow (Wednesday) at 9:30 a. m., at Holy Cross Church, where in the Requiem High Mass will be celebrated for the repose of his soul. Internment, St. Mary’s Cemetery, Oakland.

Friends may call at his late residence 1215 Broderick Street, until 2 p.m., today (Tuesday) at which time Lieutenant Herlihy will be taken to the rotunda of City Hall and lie in state until 8:45 a.m. Wednesday morning (White’s Service.)

FIREMAN HERO TO HAVE RITES TODAY.

Simple ceremonies will mark the funeral today for Lieutenant James C. Herlihy, of the San Francisco Fire Department, who lost his life early Monday morning while attempting to rescue fireman trapped in a smoke and water filled basement at 638 Clay street.

Original plans for the funeral which included the placing of the body and state under the rotunda of City Hall were abandoned at the request of Margaret E, Herlihy, the widow who asked that the funeral be made as simple as possible.
