For the first time in his long career as a city fireman, Captain David Britt, in command Truck No. 3, on Post Street, near Polk, failed heed the gone early yesterday morning when it tapped out an alarm.
Apparently dozing in his chair he could not be awakened by the urgent shaking his comrades. The company left him and his chair, put out a small fire in the apartment of William Starbuck, 1600 California Street, and then returned.
Captain Britt had not moved, and at the Central Emergency Hospital, where he was taken in an ambulance, physician said that the veteran firefighter just as shrieking sirens and jangling bells were ushering in the new year.
Captain Britt was 40 years old and lived at 750 Nineteenth avenue. He leaves two sons, 10 and 12 years old; a mother and sister. His family last night was completing arrangements for the funeral, which will be conducted with civic honors.
One of the most popular members of the San Francisco fire department, Captain Britt was energetic in all the affairs of the organization.
